Costa Almeria

Almeria is the most easterly of the eight provinces of Andalucia and it’s coast the Costa Almeria runs from Adra in the west to the small town of San Juan de los Terreros on the eastern border with the Costa Calida. For many years the province of Almeria has relied on its fruit and vegetable production for its wealth. In recent years the boom in Spanish property has resulted in a new inward investment. Almeria property is amongst the cheapest on the southern coasts of Spain (especially in the region of Andalucia) although prices have seen a steady increase in recent years.

As with all of the provinces that make up Andalucia the largest of Spain’s autonomous regions, Almeria has it’s own distinct qualities and identity. Inland from the Costa Almeria is the only desert environment in mainland Europe which takes up huge swathes of the countryside. There are a number of locations in land, which provide Almeria property at attractive prices. Foreign property buyers and investors are attracted to properties inland in Almeria for the peace and serenity of the desert environment and the strong potential for capital growth. The deserts of Almeria have some of the clearest skies in the world virtually free of light pollution, which makes Almeria a popular destination for astronomers from all over the world. If you are considering investing in Almeria property you will enjoy some of the clearest starry skies imaginable.

The desert environment was also a major pull for film directors during the 1960’s and 1970’s with many of the now iconic ‘Spaghetti Westerns’ being filmed there. Tourists today can visit the sets of the old movies at what is now known as ‘Mini Hollywood’ near the town of Tabernas. Towns which are proving popular with foreign property buyers in Almeria include Tabernas, Albox, Vera and of course the massive modern development of Desert Springs around Almanzora.

Driving through the deserts of Almeria as you approach the coast, your breath is taken away as you descend steep cliffs and see the wonderful deep blue of the Mediterranean with the sun glistening off it’s mirror-like surface. Much of the Costa Almeria is rocky, which ensures that unlike some other parts of southern Spain the waters are perfectly clear making them ideal for snorkelling and swimming. Many of the beaches are set on deserted coves and it is still possible to find virtual seclusion even in the height of summer! Indeed the Costa Almeria is famed for its nudist beaches, so don’t be alarmed if you occasionally encounter some unusual bits basking in the sun. If sand and busy beach life are what you are after however then you will not be disappointed many of the most popular areas for purchasing Almeria property such as Roquetas de Mar, Almerimar, Mojacar and Garrucha are set on wonderful sandy beaches and have a lively bustling feel.

The Costa and indeed province of Almeria is one of the warmest (lets face it hottest) in the whole of Spain and this is one of its main attractions for those seeking Spanish property. Temperatures in the summer can often reach into the early 40’s during the day with wonderful light warm winds making dining on the terrace or eating out an absolute pleasure for at least 5 months of the year.

The Costa Almeria is served well by Almeria international airport and also that of Murcia an hour or so drive away. The frequency and low cost of flights to and from the UK and elsewhere in northern Europe has further increased the viability of buying property in Almeria. This ease of access combined with relatively low cost opportunity to invest in real estate here has led to more and more foreign property buyers choosing Almeria over Spanish property for sale in other regions.

Much of the biggest property development on the Costa Almeria is centred around the town of Roquetas de Mar. Here you will find Almeria property to suit all tastes and budgets. What’s more massive inward development and investment in recent years has led to a fantastic infrastructure and also wonderful shopping opportunities, amenities and recreational facilities. The shopping centre Gran Plaza is the largest in Andalucia (putting many in northern Europe to shame) and is owned by the same company as the now famous La Cañada in Marbella.

The property market in Almeria shows no signs of abating in coming years, in fact it is experiencing exceptional growth and buoyancy. Whatever you are looking for be it a holiday home in the sun, capital growth and investment opportunity a home on the golf course or the peace and tranquillity of the open desert areas property in Almeria can provide it all.
