relating to its history culture and lifestyle.
Budapest is a beautiful
city in the heart of central Europe, which for centuries was in the thick
of European politics and commercial activity. Situated on either
side of the River Danube, Budapest is actually two cities, that of Pest on the
eastern flatter bank and Buda, which occupies the hillier western bank
of the river. Founded by the Celts in the first century BC, it has been
occupied by the Romans, Tartars and Turks during the Ottoman conquest
of Central Europe. During the 19th Century the city was central to the
administration of the great Austro Hungarian empire in which Budapest
was the twin capital in the dual monarchy. After the First World War the
power of Budapest declined in a hostile central European environment.
After World War Two Hungary
was occupied by the Soviet Union and became a satellite state within the
Iron curtain. Since 1989, the country has become one of the leading emerging
economies of central Europe. Stable government and steady growth has ensured
that the country is looking positively towards the future. Hungary joined
the European Union in May 2004 and since then has emerged as one of the
strongest economies and more attractive investment options of the ten
new entrants.
Today
Budapest is a vibrant cosmopolitan European capital attempting to regain
its place as a one of Europe's foremost cultural destinations. There are
literally hundreds of great restaurants of all types in the city and those
considering the purchase of property for sale in Budapest will be delighted
by the busy life of the city, its architectural and cultural treasures
and the lively pavement café culture.
The city has a rich tradition
of Classical music, opera, ballet and Romany dance. Entertainment listings
in English are provided in Budapest Week and Budapest Sun . The monthly
Budapest Style also is very good for cultural listings. Online cultural
listings are also available at www.budapestinfo.hu/en/.
In terms of climate, Budapest
is very similar to that of the UK. When considering the purchase of property
for sale in Budapest or renovation of older property here this is a factor
best kept in mind. Average temperatures in January are around freezing
while midsummer temperatures in July and August are between 21 to 25 degrees
centigrade.
